As a child, you were unconsciously figuring out three major things:
- How to be safe and secure (perhaps even how to survive)
- How to garner the love and esteem of those around you
- How to control the way others respond to you
By the age of 12, you had formed your unconscious beliefs in these three areas. These core beliefs are powerful, unconscious drivers of personality that often dictate what a person says and does. They are so powerful, in fact, that people are more influenced by their core beliefs than by what they have learned as an adult.
Dr. Smith helps you explore your personal core beliefs with a process he developed called “The Core Story.” The process, based on the genogram*, takes the unconscious and unseen and makes them concrete. The Core Story diagram, similar to a diagram of your family tree, allows you to quickly identify and understand various relationships and traits in your family history that may have had an influence on your current state.
In a safe and confidential setting, Terry listens to the story of your early life and the people that were in it, eliciting the information that is diagrammed in the Core Story. Over time, the process of understanding your own story raises your awareness of your core beliefs and empowers you to decide, as an adult, if the beliefs you adopted as a child are appropriate in your life today.
If you are undecided about telling your story to Terry, you can download the questions he asks to learn more about the Core Story process. Or, if you have made an appointment and would like to be prepared, you can download the questions so you can answer them and take them with you to your appointment. Answering the questions ahead of time is certainly not required so don’t feel that you have to do this. We simply offer this option to help people feel as comfortable as possible.
*The genogram tool is used by many family therapists, psychiatrists, and counselors in a therapeutic setting.
